Meet Mr. Suhr

Mr. Suhr

Jimmy Suhr was born and raised in Springboro, Ohio. His young life and high school years were filled with musical experiences including marching band, concert band, honor band, choir, musical theater, private lessons, composing for piano and string quartet, and more. His musical journey continued as he studied music education at Ohio University. Suhr furthered his skills and knowledge with the expertise of Jason Smith (Associate Professor of Tuba), Andrew Trachsel and Richard Suk (Associate and Assistant Director of Bands and Conducting), as well as Matthew Talbert and Paul Mayhew (Associate Professors of Music Education).

Suhr had numerous honors throughout university including the Ohio Focus Award, the Ohio Talent Scholarship, the Ohio Univeristy Honors Conducting Recital, and the premieres of his tuba and euphonium pieces “Expulsio”, “Deviosity”, and “Nil Sine Labore” at both Ohio University and the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference.

Near the end of time in university, Suhr was accepted into and performed with Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps for their 2018 production “The Once and Future Carpenter”. He traveled and competed across the nation with the organization and placed 8th in the world. In 2019, he returned to school and started his professional internship at Athens City School District, where he studied under Aaron Backes (Director of Bands) and Brandon Lias (Assistant Director of Bands).

Suhr graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in the fall of 2019. He then substitute taught at Centerville City Schools until the 2020 shut down. Amid the summer of 2020, his tuba solo with piano accompaniment, “Two Dances for Puck”, was published through Cimarron Music Press.

Later that year, Suhr joined Middletown City Schools as 6th Grade Band Director and K-5 Music Teacher. Despite the many useful skills he acquired while at Middletown, he then saw an opportunity of a lifetime. In 2022, Jimmy Suhr proudly joined Anna Local Schools as their Band Director and as an Anna Rocket. Presently, he proudly guides students and serves the community through each performance with the Anna Music Program.

Mission Statement:

It is my pride and joy to be able to share the passion of music with all generations. Being able to guide and foster a caring community of musicians is a dream come true. The friends I’ve gathered through these experiences are truly like family, and I strive for every student and person to find their home when they walk into the band or music room. My room is a safe, energetic, and positive learning environment that encourages critical thinking and the development of self-initiative, awareness, evaluation, and appreciation. The students are the top priority, and it is my duty to provide all these qualities to inspire them and share the musical passion with others for years to come.
